How to ‘Win’ an Argument

Lately I’ve been thinking about how I can articulate my views in a way that doesn’t alienate my ‘enemies’. Of course I have no control over what anyone else chooses to do, but it would be pretty satisfying to come to a sense of agreement with my ideological opposite.

I think that in most cases, humility opens a door that arrogance can’t. It is really difficult to humble yourself in front of your enemy.

Lest you get the wrong idea and think I mean ‘let your enemy win’ by humility, I don’t. What I do mean is that in my struggle with an opposing view I give nothing of truth up, but everything in final outcome. This kind of surrender is hard to resist and most people warm to it.

From a religious point of view it helps to keep in mind that truth is a weapon in its own right.  Any time I stand in opposition to another person, the powers that are in any standoff are far deeper and far more powerful than two human beings. This helps me to remove from the equation (not totally of course) the personal ‘faceoff’ we might both experience. Perhaps only one of us realizes this. But the one who does, I believe, is victorious no matter the outcome.
